Gig Review: Billy Talent

Last Sunday, a couple of friends and I went to The Roundhouse in Camden to see Billy Talent (supported by Don Broco and AWOLNATION).

Let me start off by saying that The Roundhouse is such a beautiful venue. I'd never been there until this gig and so finally going inside - it is gorgeous! Really modern inside, nice facilities, nice stage, nice bar, etc... so definitely 10/10 for the venue :).

Ok, so when we got into the venue we got a prime spot waiting for Don Broco to take the stage. Even though I've already seen them once this year at Reading Festival I was still buzzing to see them again because they were that good. One great thing about this gig is that they were VERY prompt with their starting times. As soon as the clock hit 7:45pm the lights dimmed and Don Broco came running on stage. They played pretty much the same setlist they played at Reading and just as well - but one big difference was the crowd's reaction, not many of the fans there knew who Don Broco were and so it was a pretty dead crowd to be honest which threw me off a little. Nonetheless, the boys from Bedford smashed it and opened up well for AWOLNATION to follow.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of AWOLNATION so I took their set as a time to preserve my energy for Billy Talent's set. They are extremely good instrumentalists and you can tell they've been at it for a while - they sounded experienced. The crowd seemed to be enjoying them too. But for most, including me, they were just a filler and everyone was waiting for the main event - Billy Talent. Whilst I was sat watching AWOLNATION's set I met Matt (drummer/backing vocals in Don Broco) and Rob (lead singer of Don Broco) as they were hanging around near backstage. They're both lovely lovely lads. Matt said he'd had a hard gig as he was battling Laryngitis - but he still put on a great performance.

After AWOLNATION's set, Billy Talent took the stage, opening with Lonely Road To Absolution/Viking Death March. The crowd went ballistic for these first 6 minutes - I got pushed back at least 7 rows during the song! It's crazy how much the atmosphere changed when Billy Talent came on stage. The crowd kept that crazy atmosphere going throughout the whole set getting especially wild during songs like Surrender, Runnin' Across The Tracks and How It Goes. Billy Talent absolutely slayed their set - and they knew it too! After their main set finished, they came on for their encore performing - Fallen Leaves, Surprise Surprise and Red Flag. The encore was probably more mad than the actual main set! Bodies being tossed everywhere. Lyrics being chanted loudly. It was all just a little bit surreal. Such a top night!

Overall Rating - 9/10
