Gig Review: Wax Futures

On Thursday I went to a free gig at Aston Student Union where Wax Futures, supported by George Gadd and Enquiry, headlined. Free music is always a fantastic treat but free good music? Well, what could be better?!

Whilst the rather underwhelming crowd gathered close to the stage, George Gadd was busy attending to his pints and acoustic guitar. I have to say, as I had not heard of any of the bands prior to the event, I wasn't actually expecting too much and so when George stepped on stage, full of confidence, and belted out his opening track I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. He played through a mixture of around 5 or 6 originals and covers, finally ending with a Blink 182 cover. All in all a really good/confident set - I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for him in the future (feel free to follow him on Tumblr or get some FREE downloads on his bandcamp).

Next up was Enquiry. Again, a band that I'd never before heard of. I have to say that Birmingham bands are quite the fans of the three-piece band set up - every band that I've seen here so far has been a three-piece. Either way, the band stepped on stage after setting up their various pedals and just erupted into their first original - had me head bobbing and foot tapping straight from the get-go. All three of them are fantastic musicians, each displaying their individual instrumental skill throughout the set. The bassist led the vocals and they just ripped through a 5 or 6 song set each song hitting hard. Download their first EP Balloons here for just 50p or click here for a FREE download of their new single - Image Burn. After their set I actually wondered if this Wax Futures band would be able to top it...

If I'm honest, I'm not sure the Wax Futures topped it by much but their drummer probably just pushed them over the edge. I spent most of their set mouth wide open at some of the things the drummer was playing. I'm pretty sure he didn't have enough limbs to play half of the things that he played - machine! They played a 10 to 12 song setlist featuring some of their more stand out tracks "Histories", "Hashtag YOLO" and "Clocks". An absolutely cracking set, great banter and energy from the band and music that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Download their EP Breadcrumbs from their bandcamp for any price you want to pay (yes that includes 0p). If you're really into them, support them and pick up some merch from here - super cheap.

Overall Rating - 7/10
